Technical notes & limits
- You need the correct password for any file that asks for one when it opens. Unknown passwords aren’t cracked or guessed.
- Up to 100 MiB per file, with a 120-second processing limit.
How PDF passwords work
PDFs can have two kinds of password. An open password stops anyone viewing the file without it. A permissions password lets the file open but blocks printing or editing. Our engine, written in Rust and compiled to WebAssembly, checks the password you give it (or the blank one, for permission-only files) and writes an unlocked copy in your browser’s memory.
What this tool won’t do
Unlock PDF is for files you own or have permission to open. It doesn’t guess or brute-force forgotten passwords, and it can’t get past strong encryption if you don’t have the open password.
