Document security

Remove document properties, custom properties and XMP metadata, including the file identifier. Visible text, comments and attachments stay in the PDF.

This removes document metadata only. It does not redact content, remove personal details inside attachments or guarantee anonymity. Saving a changed PDF invalidates existing digital signatures. Up to 200 pages.

Remove PDF metadata in your browser

Word processors and PDF apps quietly store your name, your company, the software you used, editing dates, and a unique file ID inside every PDF. Strip all of that out before you publish or share, without uploading the file anywhere.

  • Clears Author, Title, Creator, Producer, and creation and edit dates.
  • Removes hidden XMP metadata and the file’s unique ID.
  • Runs on your device. Nothing is uploaded.
  • Pages, text, and images stay exactly the same.

How to use Remove PDF metadata

  1. Choose the PDF you want to clean (metadata removal is already selected).
  2. Click Process PDF.
  3. Download the clean copy and check its Document Properties in your PDF viewer.

Technical notes & limits

  • Removes hidden document properties only (Info dictionary, XMP, file ID). Visible text, comments, and attachments stay.
  • Saving a new copy breaks existing digital signatures.

What a PDF says about you

Even when the pages look anonymous, a PDF’s hidden properties often reveal the author’s username, the app that made it, when it was created and last edited, and a unique ID that can link copies together. Our cleaner, written in Rust and compiled to WebAssembly, removes all of that and saves a fresh copy.

This doesn’t touch what’s on the page

Removing metadata only clears hidden properties. Any names, headers, signatures, or images printed on the pages stay put. To remove something you can actually see, use Redact PDF.

Frequently asked questions

Which metadata fields are removed by this tool?

The whole document Info section (Author, Title, Subject, Keywords, Creator, Producer, CreationDate, ModDate, and any custom fields), the XMP metadata stream, and the file /ID.

Will removing metadata delete my name if it is printed on page 1?

No. This only clears hidden properties. Use Redact PDF to remove text you can see on a page.

How can I verify that the metadata was removed?

Open the new PDF in a desktop viewer and go to File → Document Properties (Ctrl+D or Cmd+D). The fields should be empty.
