Technical notes & limits
- Picks up text plus basic headings and lists. Complex tables, equations, and multi-column layouts may need manual fixes.
- Scanned, image-only PDFs need OCR before they can be converted.
How headings and lists are detected
PDFs don’t store Markdown, so the converter looks at clues on each page: bigger text becomes # / ## / ### headings, lines that start with bullets or numbers become lists, and the rest is grouped into paragraphs.
Two-column papers and scans
Two-column academic layouts, sidebars, math formulas, or tables without borders may come out in an order that needs light editing. If your PDF is a scan, run OCR PDF first so there’s text to convert.
Frequently asked questions
Does PDF to Markdown preserve headings and bullet lists?
Yes, when the PDF gives clear clues like larger heading text and bullet or number markers.
Can I convert only specific pages of a PDF to Markdown?
Yes. Type the pages or ranges (like 1-5, 9) in the Pages box before you click Convert.
Why did my scanned PDF produce an empty Markdown file?
Scans are pictures of pages with no text inside. Run OCR PDF first to recognize the English text.
